True has been around since 2003, and is known for its strict background check policies to ensure that users aren’t felons or married. At first glance, True is a site with a clean, modern look, but beyond the surface it’s a different story. So, what do you get with True? The site is free, with a subscription option if you’d like extra perks.
True’s initial sign-up process is relatively simple, requiring a username, password, email, and birthdate. Past that, you’re asked to provide a few basic things like what you’re interested in, your marital status, looks, etc. Later on you have the option to add photos, a tagline, and description.

Something that really put me off during the sign up process was how True immediately suggested that I subscribed to their service. Although they’re a mostly free dating site, there are optional perks. It gave me the impression that entering my payment info was required to interact on the site, as it offered a three day trial and the option to cancel any time. I did discover that you can simply navigate to your home page to avoid entering any kind of payment information.
It looks like you’re required to enter payment information off the bat, but you can click away.
Matching
When you sign up to True, you’re required to fill out only a few very basic match-type questions, but you’re given the option to fill out their various personality tests — sex, communication, personality, interests, and romance. Thing is, you’re not required in any way to fill these more in-depth quizzes out, so your initial matching is based off of the sign up process.

Ads
Ads are a part of being on the Internet, so seeing a few on dating sites is expected. I have to admit, the ads on True were especially obnoxious though. There are a few on every page, but they should attempt to accept ads that are more toned-down:

They might not look too offensive off the bat, but they were blinking different colors! I was hoping they’d refresh to different ads while taking a personality test, but they didn’t. I had to close the page — I was getting a headache.
