PlentyOfFish has been around since 2006, and is considered the first real free dating website. PlentyOfFish is a simple site, but is slow-loading, and poorly designed compared to others — I had to reload the page several times to submit forms, and many elements seem to be sloppily placed on the page. After five years of being around, a dating site like PlentyOfFish should catch up with the game and get a makeover. So, what do you get with PlentyOfFish? The site is free, with a subscription option if you’d like to be at the top of search results, as well as a few other perks.
PlentyOfFish’s initial sign-up process is relatively simple, requiring a username, password, email, and birthdate. Past that, you’re asked to provide a few basic things like what you’re interested in, your marital status, orientation, looks, etc. You’re also asked to provide a photo, tagline, description, interests, and ideal first date.

PlentyOfFish profiles are very simple, but not very well laid out
Something that really put me off during the sign up process was uploading a photo. It seems simple enough, but the site’s main offering is a Flash photo uploader that doesn’t work very well. There’s an option underneath to upload a photo using a simpler uploader, and I was able to upload a photo instantly with that tool. Keep in mind that with the free membership, you’re able to upload only 8 photos. Upgrade for the option to upload 16.

Matching
When you sign up to PlentyOfFish, you’re not required to fill out any match-type questions, but you’re given the option to fill out a few questions that the site uses to match you with others — I don’t believe it’s enough though. PlentyOfFish asks for your income and birth order for behind the scenes matching, but doesn’t share this information publicly. I honestly feel like there’s so much more to matching than that, and although they state that the chemistry test results are used, that isn’t even required in sign up.
